Generally speaking, once you have had fertility treatment, you will have to wait at least 14 days before the clinic will carry out the test but if you are impatient, home tests are fairly accurate and easily available. It is essential to remember though that if the test is run too soon after the treatment, the test could indicate a false positive.

If you are expecting, you start to notice other clues such as dropping your period, feeling or being sick, tender breasts, wanting to go to the toilet more frequently, tiredness, being sensitive to strong tastes and odors, in addition to mood swings.

A few clinics continue to stay in touch during the first few weeks of pregnancy and perform a few ultrasound scans to ensure your foetus is growing normally. Occasionally clinics do not supply an aftercare service so other measures during pregnancy will have to be made.

Even providing your fertility treatment is successful, don’t be concerned if you are not as overjoyed as you expected to be as it can take a while to adjust. There is nothing wrong with this, but the important thing is to accept your emotions whatever they are, and to take into consideration that virtually all mums-to-be go through a mixture of emotions on learning they are pregnant whether they have been through fertility treatment or not.

Being pregnant after fertility treatment should not be any different than an individual who hasn’t gone through fertility treatment however, you may feel it more emotionally stressful.

At times however, it may be necessary to have extra scans at the hospital. Possible reasons for this might be because they have had previous problems like miscarriages, multiple birth, and stillbirths or, owing to their general health. The pregnant womans age is also a factor especially when the expectant mother is older because as you age the more likely it is that troubles will come about.

You may be surprised to learn that over a million infants around the world have been born as a consequence of assisted conception treatment such as IVF and the probability is you will give deliver a healthy baby. This does not mean there will not be any problems because all medical treatment and every pregnancy have some element of risk, even those conceived by normal means, but luckily most of the problems are small. It might be easier said and done but try to slow down during the pregnancy and enjoy the time as much as you can.

Regrettably the amount of miscarriages after the use of IVF is above those for natural conception. Often the cause of this is because women who have undergone fertility treatment will have a pregnancy test very early on in the pregnancy. Then of course there is the situation where a woman who becomes pregnant naturally may experience what she believes is a late menstrual period when in truth an embryo has been created, but failed to implant. Another problem is of course the risk of spontaneous abortion goes up with age because women who have fertility treatment are often, more mature than those who conceive through natural methods. This subject always raises many questions but they would be best dealt with by your own fertility clinic consultant.
